What Is the Dragon Boat Festival?
The Dragon Boat Festival, also known as Duanwu Festival (端午节), is a traditional Chinese holiday celebrated on the fifth day of the fifth month of the lunar calendar. The festival has been observed for more than two thousand years and remains one of the most important cultural celebrations in China and many Chinese communities around the world.
The holiday is often associated with the ancient poet Qu Yuan, who is remembered for his patriotism and devotion to his country. According to tradition, local people raced out in boats to search for him and threw rice into the river to protect his body from fish. Over time, these traditions evolved into the dragon boat races and zongzi-eating customs that are widely enjoyed today.
