Free Mid-Autumn Festival Snakes and Ladders Game

Mid-Autumn Festival is coming soon. It is a perfect opportunity to introduce students to Chinese traditions in an interactive way. One of the best classroom activities for this season is playing a Mid-Autumn Festival Snakes and Ladders game.

On this page, you can find Snakes and Ladders printable board game for the Mid-Autumn Festival.

How to play the game

Preparation

  • Simply print the snakes and ladders sheet out, suggest using hard cardstock or laminate for durable use. (There are A4 size and 2xA4 size versions that you can select.)
  • Students need one dice and some small objects as tokens such as erasers.
    • If you don’t have a dice, check out our free dice template, print the dice template out with cardstock, write numbers on each side, cut out the dice shape, and glue the edges.
    • To make the dice fun and engaging, you can write the numbers on the dice in Chinese so that students can get the chance to practice Chinese numbers 1 through 6 as well.)

How the Game Works

Just like the classic snakes and ladders, students roll a die and move along the board. But instead of ordinary squares, each space is decorated with Mid-Autumn Festival vocabulary images—like 月饼 (yuèbǐng, mooncake), 灯笼 (dēnglóng, lantern), and 月亮 (yuèliàng, moon) etc..

  •  Each player places their token at square 1 (the start). Players take turns rolling the dice. Move their token forward the number of spaces shown on the dice. If student lands on the bottom of a  ladder 🪜: Climb up to the square at the top of the ladder. If student lands on the head of a snake 🐍: Slide down to the square at the snake’s tail. Student who reaches the goal square first wins.
  • Teachers can add challenges, like using the word in a sentence or matching it with a picture.
  • Snakes and ladders keep the game exciting, while the theme keeps it festive.

Why It’s Great for the Classroom

  • Engaging: Kids love board games, and this one turns learning into play.
  • Memorable: Vocabulary connected to the festival is easier for students to remember.
  • Flexible: Works for small groups, pairs, or the whole class.

Extend the Learning

You can combine the board game with other Mid-Autumn Festival activities like:

This way, students get repeated exposure to key words in different formats.
