Free Months of the Year Chinese Worksheet (Hanzi Practice)

Learning how to talk about time is an essential part of mastering any language, and in Chinese, understanding the months of the year is one of the first steps toward building strong communication skills. That’s why we’ve created this free Months of the Year Chinese worksheet, designed especially for beginners and young learners who are just starting their journey with Chinese characters (Hanzi).

This worksheet focuses on helping learners recognize, understand, and use the 12 months in Chinese through a simple yet effective activity. It is a Hanzi-only worksheet, making it perfect for learners who are ready to strengthen their character recognition skills without relying on pinyin prompts.

🧧 What’s Included in the Worksheet?

In this worksheet, learners are given five months written in Chinese characters. For each given month, they are asked to:

  • Write the previous month (last month/ 上个月 shàng ge yuè) in Chinese
  • Write the next month下个月 xià ge yuè) in Chinese

All answers must be written in the space provided using Hanzi only, which encourages learners to actively recall and write characters rather than passively recognize them.

For example, if the given month is:

三月

Students would write:

  • 二月 as the previous month
  • 四月 as the next month

This type of structured practice helps reinforce sequencing skills while building confidence in writing Chinese characters.

🌟 Why This Worksheet Is Effective

This activity goes beyond simple memorization. By asking learners to think about the order of months and write both the previous and next months, it encourages:

  • Logical thinking and sequencing skills
  • Active recall of vocabulary
  • Stronger retention of Hanzi characters
  • Understanding of how months are structured in Chinese

In Chinese, months follow a very clear and logical pattern using numbers + 月 (yuè), meaning “month.” Once learners understand this pattern, they can easily apply it across all 12 months.

📚 The 12 Months in Chinese

Here is a complete list of the 12 months in Chinese, including English, Hanzi, and pinyin:

  1. January — 一月 (yī yuè)
  2. February — 二月 (èr yuè)
