Free Mid-Autumn Festival Chinese Character Bingo

The Mid-Autumn Festival (中秋节 Zhōngqiū Jié) is a time for family, traditions, and mooncakes. It’s also a wonderful opportunity for kids and learners to explore Chinese culture while practicing language skills. What better way to do that than with a fun game of Chinese Character Bingo? Celebrate Mid-Autumn Festival with Bingo Fun!

We’ve created a nice Mid-Autumn Festival Bingo set featuring colorful Chinese words-each Character (hanzi) is color-coded by its tone (1st, 2nd, 3rd, or 4th) to make pronunciation easier to remember. It’s the perfect activity for classrooms, family gatherings, or cultural celebrations.

How to Play Mid-Autumn Chinese Character Bingo

What You Need

  • Bingo cards (each player gets one)
  • Calling cards (cut them out and put them in a bag, box, or stack)
  • Markers (coins, buttons, counters, or just a pen/pencil to cross off)

Setup

  1. Give each player one bingo card.
  2. Place all the calling cards face down or in a container.
  3. Make sure players have markers or pencils ready.

How to Play

  1. The caller picks a calling card and reads it aloud.
    • Bonus: Ask students to read the character aloud themselves for practice!
  2. Players check their bingo cards. If they have that character, they mark it.
  3. Continue drawing and reading cards one at a time.
  4. The first player to mark a full row (horizontal, vertical, or diagonal) shouts “Bingo!” and wins.

Variations (for more fun!)

  • Four Corners → Winner is the first to mark all 4 corners.
  • Full Card → Winner must cover the entire card (longer game).
  • Cultural Twist → When a word is called, players can say what it means in English (e.g., 月饼 yuèbǐng = mooncake).
