Free Mid-Autumn Festival Coloring Pages for Kids

Mid-Autumn Festival is a wonderful time to introduce children to Chinese culture through fun, hands-on activities. Also known as the Moon Festival, this traditional Chinese festival is celebrated with family gatherings, mooncakes, lanterns, and beautiful moonlit nights.

To help children learn about the festival while practicing Chinese, we’re excited to share these free Mid-Autumn Festival coloring pages! This printable set includes two coloring pages with different difficulty levels, making it easy to choose an activity that matches your child’s or students’ abilities.

Our free Mid-Autumn Festival coloring pages feature a festive theme inspired by this special Chinese holiday. Children can enjoy coloring while becoming familiar with traditional Mid-Autumn Festival elements.

The two pages are designed with different levels of difficulty.

The first page has a simpler design and is suitable for younger children or beginners. It provides larger, easier-to-color areas, allowing children to focus on enjoying the activity without becoming overwhelmed by too many small details.

The second page includes more details and smaller areas to color, making it a great choice for older children or students who enjoy more challenging coloring activities.

Having two difficulty levels makes this printable especially useful for families and classrooms with children of different ages and abilities. You can give each child the page that best matches their level, or let children choose which one they would like to color.

A Fun Way to Learn About Chinese Culture

Coloring is more than just a creative activity. It can also provide an opportunity to introduce children to Chinese culture and vocabulary.

While children color, parents and teachers can talk about Mid-Autumn Festival and introduce simple Chinese words and phrases related to the holiday.

For example, children can learn:

  • 中秋节 — Zhōngqiū Jié — Mid-Autumn Festival
  • 月亮 — yuèliang — moon
  • 月饼 — yuèbǐng — mooncake
  • 灯笼 — dēnglong — lantern
  • 家人 — jiārén — family

You don’t need to turn the coloring activity into a formal lesson. Even a few simple questions can turn the printable into a Chinese speaking activity.

You could ask:

这是什么?
Zhè shì shénme?
What is this?

这是月亮。
Zhè shì yuèliang.
This is the moon.

Or simply practice saying 中秋节 (Zhōngqiū Jié) together while children color.

For younger learners, parents can say the vocabulary aloud and have children repeat it. Older students can practice recognizing the Chinese characters and connecting them with their meanings.

Two Difficulty Levels for Flexible Learning

One of the advantages of this free printable is that the two pages aren’t exactly the same in terms of difficulty.

Easier Coloring Page

The easier page is a good option for:

  • Preschool children
  • Kindergarten students
  • Younger Chinese learners
  • Children who are new to coloring
  • Short classroom activities
  • Parent-child learning at home

The larger, simpler areas make it easier for little hands to stay inside the lines while enjoying the Mid-Autumn Festival theme.

More Challenging Coloring Page

The more detailed page is suitable for:

  • Elementary students
  • Older children
  • Children who enjoy detailed coloring
  • Chinese language learners
  • Cultural lessons
  • Independent quiet-time activities

You can also use both pages with the same child. Start with the easier page and save the more detailed one for another activity.

Perfect for Home or Classroom Use

These free Mid-Autumn Festival coloring pages can be used in many different ways.

At home, parents can print the pages as a relaxing holiday activity. Children can color while listening to a story about the Mid-Autumn Festival or while learning a few Chinese vocabulary words.

In the classroom, teachers can use the pages as part of a Chinese culture lesson. They can also be used as an early-finisher activity, a seasonal art project, or a take-home worksheet.

You could even create a small Mid-Autumn Festival display by hanging the finished coloring pages around the classroom.

For children learning Chinese as a second language, combining visuals, Chinese vocabulary, speaking, and coloring can make the learning experience more engaging and memorable.

Coloring activities can be especially helpful for young learners because it makes the learning experience feel relaxed and enjoyable.
