Learning Chinese language you would need to learn Chinese phonetic alphabets (Pinyin) and Chinese characters (Hanzi). Pinyin is the basis of Chinese pronunciation and it is quite similar to English phonetics, while Hanzi is the written Chinese language which is totally different image comparing to Pinyin. For beginner learners Pinyin can be easier for beginners to start with especially for those who are from English speaking countries.
