Print out our Snakes and Ladders board template. For better durability, we suggest:

- Laminating the board
- Or placing the printed board into a clear file or plastic sleeve while playing
This helps the board last longer, especially in classroom use.
Write your learning content on the board
In each square, write what you would like your young learners to practice, such as:
- Chinese numbers
- English numbers
- Chinese Hanzi
- Vocabulary words
- Sight words
- Simple phrases
This makes the board fully customizable for any lesson.
One die (or two for variation)
Normally, one die is enough.
You can also use two dice for:
- Older students
- Faster games
- More challenge and excitement
No dice? No problem!

How to Play
Starting Point
- All players place their token on square 1 (or “Start”).
- Decide who goes first by playing: Rock Scissors Paper(石头剪刀布/Shí tóu jiǎn dāo bù)
- Players then take turns rolling the die.
Moving Forward
- On your turn, roll the die and move your token forward by the number shown.
- When you land on a square, say the word or number written there.
- For more advanced learners, encourage them to:
- Say the number in Chinese, pinyin, and English
- Or make a simple sentence using the word, for example:
- “这是五。” (This is five.)
- “我有三本书。” (I have three books.)
Climbing Ladders
- If you land exactly at the bottom of a ladder, you may climb straight up to the square at the top of the ladder.
- Say the new word or number you land on again after climbing.
Sliding Down Snakes
- If you land exactly on the head of a snake, you must slide down to the square at the snake’s tail.
- Say the word or number on the new square as well.
Winning the Game
- The first player to reach the final square wins the game.
- You can choose whether players must roll the exact number to land on the final square, or allow them to pass it for a faster game.

Why Teachers and parents love this Snakes and Ladders game
It turns learning into something children truly enjoy. Instead of feeling like another worksheet or task, it feels like play.
When children are excited and relaxed, they participate more willingly, take more risks in speaking, and remember what they learn more easily.
The game naturally creates a positive emotional connection with Chinese learning, which is one of the most important factors for long-term success.
Teachers appreciate how easy it is to prepare and use.
It is a simple “print and go” resource that fits perfectly into busy teaching schedules. There is no complicated setup, no special equipment needed, and no long explanation time.
Once students understand the basic rules, they can play independently, allowing teachers to walk around, observe pronunciation, and give individual support where needed.
It is ideal for small group work, learning centers, and review lessons.
Parents and Caregivers love it
It brings Chinese learning into the home in a natural and stress-free way. Many parents and caregivers worry about how to support their children’s language learning without turning their home into another classroom.
This game solves that problem by making learning feel like family time. Children do not feel pressured, and parents do not need professional teaching skills to use it successfully.
Another reason teachers and parents like this game is its flexibility. It works for different ages, different levels, and different learning goals.
It can be used for speaking practice, Hanzi reading practice, listening activities, or even sentence building for more advanced learners. The same board can be used again and again in new ways, which makes it a very cost-effective and long-lasting teaching tool.
The game also supports social and emotional development. Children practice turn-taking, following rules, handling winning and losing, and encouraging classmates.
These skills are just as important as academic learning, and games like this provide a natural environment for developing them.
Finally, teachers and parents love that this game builds confidence. Children feel successful quickly, especially with numbers 1–10.
Each correct answer, each move forward, and each completed game helps children believe that learning Chinese is something they can do.
That confidence becomes the foundation for all future language learning.
